You need a commissioner that will support your ideas and fight for the needs of our communities in partnership with community! I will work in partnership across government agencies bringing a true collaborative system to truly serve us all. I will work to authentically and intentionally earn your respect and trust.
It is part of my vision that we reengage with the youth of this great city reintroducing them to our staff, parks, facilities and great programming. It is imperative that children and teens create memories, learn skills and build confidence as they explore new interests and passions at our local parks. We must create programs which ensure that every young person has an opportunity to envision and pursue a positive future. These programs must include: sports, recreation, arts and leadership. Our programming must be the base at which children and teens build strong foundations of confidence and leadership that materialize throughout their life well into adult-hood. Programming will need to be unique to the community with some core elements allowing youth workers and other professional staff to truly serve the needs of the community.
My vision and plan for our great parks is to partner with non-profit, social service and government entities to ensure that we do not have unhoused people sleeping in our parks. The parks are meant as an escape or place of peace for families and those who frequent them. It is not a suitable option for our fellow neighbors to sleep in the parks. We must work and be creative with all the resources we have and use them to serve our community both housed and unhoused. We must keep the parks as a place for families and individuals to enjoy recreating, while working with our partners to ensure that our unhoused neighbors are being connected to all the resources possible.
An additional part of my vision and plan for our great parks is to increase access for all. One of the many ways that we will tackle this is by increasing access for youth, families, elders and all those in between with innovative programming and reduced fees where needed. We are perfectly position to offer intergenerational programs and events at most if not all of our parks. We must also offer, create and execute programming that is inclusive to all.
With the city- wide rise in crime and concerns around safety we must work in partnership with families, youth workers, park staff and park police to address safety for all in our parks. We must deal with public safety collectively. We must address when, how and what our park police role will be in public safety in and around our parks. How park police connect and serve is important us all.
We will use our capital to renew our aging infrastructures and leverage partnerships that produce new and renewed parks and facilities that are innovative and world class. We must evolve with the time and technology giving room for flexibility of spaces and the interchangeability of these programs based on the community needs. Maintaining our reputation for the #1 parks system is important and it must be that way for all.
Filing day… it‘s official folks we are on the ballot. This is a community campaign that will work for all of us, building parks that we all truly enjoy! Thank you for your support, insight and encouragement ! #aliciaforparks #afp #aliciaforparksatlarge
